Tower of Skulls

skull The eerie sight of the Tower of Skulls in Niš. In 1809, with defeat inevitable, the Serbian Duke of Resava fired his pistol into the gunpowder stores of the Turkish defenses. The explosion killed 4000 Serbs and 10,000 Turks.  To deter future attacks the Turks embedded the skulls of the dead Serbs into a tower.

Mount Midžor

mount-midzor Visited Mount Midžor (2168 meters) on the Bulgarian border southeast of Knjaževac. Shared the slopes with grazing cattle, their bells adding a soundtrack to the scene.
